Financial Assessment: The HSE will complete an assessment based on the details provided on your application form about your current income and assets and will determine on how much you will need to pay towards your cost of nursing home care. You will be assessed based on 80% of your income (less any allowable deductions) and 7.5% of any assets. The first 36,000 will be excluded from the assessment. Some allowances may apply for family-owned farms, businesses or Principle Private Residents (family home). Please click the link below for more information.

If you wish to apply for the loan, then you will need to complete part 5 of the original application form or you can submit a separate application at any stage while resident in nursing home.

Choosing the right nursing home:

Finding the right nursing home can be one of the most difficult and important decisions for you and your family. It is important that you have as much information as possible to ensure that you find the best home that can meet you or your loved ones needs. It is important not just to look at the homes ability to manage medical needs but also the place you feel can offer you a homely environment with a friendly and caring team to help improve your quality of life while creating a warm and welcoming environment for your family and visitors.   We hope the information below will help you on this journey:

Make a list prior to commencing your research of what is most important for you and your loved one, this may include some or all of:

  • Location
  • Availability of specialist service i.e., Dementia specific service
  • Overall atmosphere/Environment
  • Additional services such as Physiotherapist, Chiropodist, GP, Hairdressing
  • Activities to suit you or your loved one’s interest.
  • Variety and quality of food
  • Visiting times
  • Person Centered approach to care.

Step 2

Research homes
in your area

Identify the nursing homes in your area. Nursing homes Ireland has a list of nursing homes in your are: Nursing Homes Archive - Nursing Homes Ireland (nhi.ie).

Do you research on those in your selected area:

  • Research their website for more information on what they do.
  • Research their Social Media pages
  • Speak to anyone that you know that has had experience in any of these homes.
  • Check recent inspection reports on www.hiqa.ie

Step 3

Visit the nursing
homes

This is the most important step in choosing the right nursing home, once you have narrowed down your search to the two or three nursing homes that you feel can most meet your needs you will need to contact them to arrange a visit. This gives you the opportunity to meet the team, see the environment and gain further information. It is worth visiting more than one to allow you to make an informed decision.

The HSE have created the checklist below which might assist you during your visit.
