The costs of nursing home care can be expensive which is why the government introduced the Nursing Home Support Scheme, also known as Fair Deal.
The scheme provides financial support towards the cost of care for any registered nursing home. Fair Deal will only be available to those requiring long term care and consists of 4 steps:
Complete Application Form: You will need to complete and sign an application and submit to your local fair deal office the details of all the offices are located at the end of the application form which can be found by clicking the link below.

Care Needs Assessment: On receipt of your application the HSE will contact you to arrange a care needs assessment, this purpose of this to assess the level of care needed and suitability for long Term Care.
The assessment will be completed by a HSE healthcare professional. A copy of the assessment used below:

Financial Assessment: The HSE will complete an assessment based on the details provided on your application form about your current income and assets and will determine on how much you will need to pay towards your cost of nursing home care. You will be assessed based on 80% of your income (less any allowable deductions) and 7.5% of any assets. The first 36,000 will be excluded from the assessment. Some allowances may apply for family-owned farms, businesses or Principle Private Residents (family home). Please click the link below for more information.
About the Fair Deal scheme - HSE.ie
Applying Nursing home loan (optional): If you have been approved for fair deal and there is a contribution based on assets (land or property) you can apply to defer the payment of this contribution until later date, generally the earlier of when the asset is sold or when the person passes away.
If you wish to apply for the loan, then you will need to complete part 5 of the original application form or you can submit a separate application at any stage while resident in nursing home.

This is the most important step in choosing the right nursing home, once you have narrowed down your search to the two or three nursing homes that you feel can most meet your needs you will need to contact them to arrange a visit. This gives you the opportunity to meet the team, see the environment and gain further information. It is worth visiting more than one to allow you to make an informed decision.
